Okay so after all the hype on the CWC topic about grey importing & buying online, i just got the final costing for SIDI shoes purchased on line

Sidi Genius 6.6 full carbon CSC team issue (& every other colour to choose from) ex stock

Purchased from Chainreactioncycles online

Size 48 ex stock (yes i have big feet i know)

Price including postage from UK R 2 061.06

Clearing in SA R 25.00

VAT R 288.55

Total = R 2 374.61

Best LBS price offered R 3 400.00 & worst LBS price offered R 3 500.00. None had stock & i would have to wait until end February. And spoke to 7 different shops throughout the country.

Saving = R1 025.39 which i will put towards that Campy Chorus carbon Ultra Torque 10 speed upgrade, which no doubt will also go overseas online if the local LBS don't respond to my emails for quotes and come to the party on prices.

Ja dude, watch out when bringing in shoes!!!

I imported a flashy set of Diadora Ergo Pro MTB shoes. 2nd best model I think it is. Shoes cost me like R1200, MUCH cheaper than locally. When I went to fetch them I was banged with a R461.00 levy to get them. Fsck I was pissed off. It was still a saving over locally, but the victory just wasn't as sweet.

So get the place you get them from to mark them as being used (tell someone to stick their foot in it), or as a gift. Check this before you buy.

Icycling - I brought these in through legite channels, which was cleared through customs hence the VAT i payed. nowhere was i asked or was it indicated that 30% duty must be payed. I have asked our companies clearing agent to look deeper into this duty thing on cycling shoes. who knows maybe it no longer exists. Imagine if one of the importers got it lifted some time ago and has merely carried on charging as if it still existed.

mmmmmm sounds like another cartel conspiracy theory. But i will dig deeper and reveal the truth to the cycling fraternity.

There we stood 5 against 100, Man how we donnered those 5

With or without a lubricant? Did you at least ask them to use a condom? Geek

Looking at a Sigma Bike comp/hrm  BC2006 wireless for myself.

Called my LBS - R1150 but don't have stock and never sold any before.

Called CWC - R1399.

Called a few others but nobody seems to stock it.

Went online. BTW, chainreaction isn't the most affordable for many of the things I looked at. They wanted ?75 for the Sigma.

Found it for $85 on ebikestop. $15 shipping but only in the US. So will have my aunt bring it over in 2 months time.

Ok it was 45% and droped to 30% back in about 97 - 2 of us took up this fight - at the time I imported cycling shoes - now I do not. But Azonic took the chance and paid the price you didn't as an official impoter and assuming the 30% still exists you always pay that price!

I await the report back and maybe you got lucky!

I've imported MTB frames (Scalpels), levies were R196. Funny how a big box with a bike frame can be R196, but a small box of shoes is R461.

It is possible to convince customs to classify cycling shoes as "spiked athletic shoes" - they have less customs duty than normal shoes.

madmarc, if you did not pay any additional customs duty except vat, you were lucky.

So now you know how the local importer of shoes feel - brings in say 500 pairs pays 30% plus 14% vat upfront on correct invoice and then sits on the tsock and hopes it will sell before the shoes have been replaced by a later version! Bad business!!! as he will always seem to miss the size needed!

Do not slip on the oil slick......DO NOT make the mistake. If you buy a car buy Toyata, a GPS - Garmin, groupset - Shimano, bicycle tyres - Continental, bicycle - Raleigh and if you buy a heartrate monitor you buy POLAR!!!!!! Nothing beats them, good quality, quality service and works well and accurate.

[/quote']A Toyata... lol

Actually Toyotas are almost as cr@p as the next car. Have a gander at the JD Power survey or other car surveys and see where Toyota stand. The car to have for quality and reliability is a Honda. I drive a Golf... but I digress...

Didn't Raleigh have a whole lot of problem frames?

I have only used Shimano so far.

I haven't bought a GPS yet.

As for bike tyres, I haven't had pproblems with any of the various brands I've used.

I'm not really a brand sl*t. I have been using HRMs since 1996. Started with a CardioSport, then a Cateye combination cycle comp/hrm, something else I can't remember right now, another CardioSport, a Polar F11, a Polar CS200 - all of them work or worked very well. Actually it's the Polar with it's coded transmitter that causes the most hassles.

Wink
