So I have a new frame set and not the mechanical skills to build it up and heard of people who had their LBS build up their frames complain about the workmanship, particularly in the BB area.

What's the pitfalls? And what's to look out or when searching for a good mechanic to do for me?

Unortunately there is zero standard when it comes to "mechanics" in South Africa. They are all trained by somebody who thinks he can. Some may turn out to be good. You will have to depend on the hearsay of another cyclist....... me, I am a good self trained mechanic, but I only work on my own bikes because I have a decent job.

You are in a privileged position to be able to do it all yourself. Get the park tool bike mechanic book, do some googling and watch plenty of YouTube vids. Search for bicycle tutor as well, plenty of instructional videos. Good luck and post pics of your build

You need the right tools, patience and the right attitude.

Learning to install/service BB was easy for me, and has worked out fine over the last year since I started doing my own work.

I find setting the gears/front derailleur the most problematic.

Also anything to do with suspension is not for the unqualified.

If you are in Gauteng, contact yellow saddle, and get to a maintenance course.

Have fun, swear a lot, but do not lose your temper.....this is an expensive indulgence!
