XTR has race and trail versions and is the top of the line, best money can buy in the SHIMANO range.

XT is comparable only directly with the XTR Trail with tool-less reach adjust features. The XTR Race versions is in another class.

In the long run I would suggest XT as it has better value for money, simply because it's almost have the price at very similar performance in actual braking (weight/finish/brand is the real reason for price difference).

There is also absolutely no reason why you should not consider the 2012 SLX brakes (model M666) as again, it offers almost exact performance at huge cost saving compared to XT in this case.

1. Basically, if you have to ASK for advice, then buy the SLX, it's more than you probably need.

2. If you are really getting into MTB' seriously and trying to spoil yourself then go for XT

3. If you want the crazy street cred and best money can buy in SHIMANO range then get XTR

* Obviously whatever I say here is limited to SHIMANO products and discounting other products/options from competitors. But if you have to ask this type of advice then I will always suggest you stick with SHIMANO, absolutely no other brake on the market is so easy to bleed, plus the performance is incredible, reliability excellent, and parts are available everywhere.

I have both XT M785 and SLX M666.

With my type of riding being a weekend warrior most of the time, I see and feel very little diffirence between them.

Value for money go SLX.

XT on my 26er dual susser and SLX on my 29er HT.

Just my 2c worth.
