Hey

So I'm shopping for new wheels. In short looking to spend around R4000 (but would love to spend as little as possible) for a set of bulletproof wheel. I am going to be stupid so want something that will survive. I am not worried about the weight. My intended uses are DH, jumping and AM.

Any recommendations?

How do Hope hubs compare to XT hubs? And will upgrading to the ZTR Flow rims be worth it from my stock Alex Rims?

Also looking for a new wheelset.

I'm not an expert on wheels so I usually ask either Jason or Johan. ;)

umm... XT (or any shimano hubs) are pretty crappy in my opinion for 1 simple reason. They use cup-n-cone bearings. Hope on the other hand uses sealed cartridge bearings. Way less maintenance and adaptable. You can use your front hub on QR, 15mm TA and 20mm TA just with 2 adapter kits.

Chat to Dial'd Bikes - www.dialdbikes.co.za about a set of Nukeproof Generators. I think they'll be in your price range. They don't list them on the site, but they can get them for you.

That's what I'm planning to do, I just don't have the cash now... the Nukeproof wheels look like a really good option... (also come in yellow and silver - see here: http://www.nukeproof...enerator-wheels)

I can vouch for these too! In fact, if you're looking for a decent "all rounder" gravity wheel for under 4k then the Nuke Proofs may be it. The Hope Pro II build will probably cost you over 4k. Especially if you go for the ZTR rims as suggested. You could build something super burly onto your Hopes (like my Hope & Spank Spike Combo (which I use for my DH wheels)... but those are not ideal for AM or jumping. A bit too meaty. Whereas I have used my Nuke Proofs for AM, currently have them on a dirt jumper. And I know of quite a few people who run them as DH wheels.

Just a suggestion, CRC have huge discounts on Eastons

Good thinking! The Havoc DH wheels have been marked down by 56% are a tad over 4k (before VAT)... but you can get them with orange accents.

The Haven's (AM version) are the same price. They lok awesome, but I wouldn't recommend them for DH. They're a bit narrow. Even the Havocs are on the narrow (but still acceptable) side for DH wheels.

How do Hope hubs compare to XT hubs..

They don't...chalk and cheese....hope is strong and designed properly, XT's are designed by people that make sponges, their seals might as well not be there.
