Just as an aside ... I always wonder when riders get/build a single speed rigid and then do everything to make it more 'comfortable'? I see comments about bigger volume tyres and them fancy schmancy curved bars that have some give, even forks that are more comfy ....

Are these bikes not just 'inherently' hard and uncomfortable?

Not all of us. I run 2.1 tyres on my rigid steel SS and my saddle of choice is a Selle Italia SLR XC Flow.

Selle San Marco Rolls. Insanely comfortable.

The Regal (or Belgian Armchair) is also amazing.

I have 2 Rolls and 1 Brooks (a B17 Special), and they are all extremely comfortable.

The Brooks took a while to break in, but is now awesome.

I uses to be involved with Specialized and for long I believed that their BG saddles was everything...

Found something just as good, and better in some cases; Fizik!

They take saddle width and shape a bit further than Spaz with their "Spine Concept" I think, and in retrospect I think their "assometer" measures you in a different position to what you ride in (flexibility and bike position)
