Hi people.

This new bike of mine is great. I really love it. The only thing is when the bike is in the tallest or lowest gear it has a tendancy to make a clicking sound. Ermm Nothing serious. And the gears don't jump or anything. It's just an annoying clicking.

Is this normal or can the gears be adjusted to take it away? As someone who is used to tearing down a dirtbike motor at the slightest odd vibration it's not something that I regard as an acceptable state of affairs. Wink

I am assuming that you are not "cross chaining".

The clicking is from the chain rubbing against the adjacent cog. A fraction more and the click will turn into a "grab" and the chain will hop over and back between the gears. As it's only the "tallest and shortest" gears its probably the limit screws that are set a tad to severe. But unless you know what you are doing (or take the time to work out which screw affects which cog) you might cause the chain to become jammed between the cluster and frame (nasty scratches & a jam) or worse let the derailleur get shoved into the spokes.

Do some reading on the internet before you touch!! If it is Shimano stuff then go to shimano.com.au where they have all the tech info which contain detailed instructions on how to set it up.

Seeing as though you have just bought the bike from CycleLab, if it is not due to "cross chainin" then take it back for them to set the gears and have a look at it. They will have no problem assisting as their after sales service is what they pride themselves onThumbs%20Up

Ah - ok. No I'm not cross chaining. It's typically when I'm in lowest gear or highest gear.

I checked and the derailleur is not hitting the spokes. I'll take it to cyclelab and have them check it out.

Thanks dudes.

Okay the problem could in the derailer ranges. If the derailer is clicking in the smallest cog at the back the 11 or 12 and the cable is slack then the range needs to be widened by unscrewing one of the screws on the derailer body (expriement) if the 23 gear has the same symptom then a similiar remedy is recommended on the other screw (there should be two) be careful here to check that the derailer does not drift into the spokes or you will pay big time. If however you got the bike from cyclelab, (don't tinker) take it back and demand that they fix it or give you a new one (its their published policy after all)
