Is it normal that my crank and BB don't spin freely when spun backwards??  I had the bike in at Mervs a month or so back and they said that the BB was full of gunk and that it was also dead so they wanted to replace it and the crank.  I said no they should just clean and lube it... spun a little easier, but now it is sorta tight again when spun backwards??

Surely this is not right and it making me work harder when i ride?  Someone got some info?

1: Race Face sucks

2: Replace

Now you can either go and buy a set of LX/XT or you can go to SKF bearings and get the unit . But you need to be able to get old bearings outta cups !

I got a set of Race Face Deus XC cranks on both my race MTB's, both spin freely. Check that they haven't put either too much or too little spacers between the cups and the frame, otherwise the cranks might pull up against the BB's bearings too tightly. If still no luck, just replace the BB.

Shops love to replace. Take it to a 2nd chop for another opinion.

Dirt-rider, their stuff don't suck.

Actually....their stuff does suck. Longest my RF BBs have lasted is 7 months, and I don't do a lot of miles.

I'm on my 2nd Deus crank after the left arm failed a year ago. This one is quite possibly going the same route as my bike has developed a similar creek to the one that lead to the discovery of the previous failure.

For top-of-the-range cranks nothing beats XTR. As much as I am heavily against the Shimano corporate machine, they make bloody fine cranks. Lower down the Truvativs seem nice.

To the OP....get yourself the Shimano BB. It works with the Race Face crank and it definitely lasts longer than the RF ones. That's not just my opinion, but many people have had the same experience.

Then I must have had the luck of ordering two duds, because both my sets are working flawlessly for over two years, and that includes many enduros, muddy Knysna cycle challenges, provincials and nationals.

Just BB bearings . LX external bearing R270 about . XT closer to R400 . But if your crank looks pitted and you gonna replaced it then you need to go and find the credit card .
