Hi all,

Busy looking to replace derailers as they are rather worn and new cables and sdjusting dont help anymore.

Does it really mind if you use a 9speed or 10 speed derailer on the front?

My guess is that on the back it matters as the cassette is smaller, but at the front it only has two cogs to choose from?

Or is there something to do with width of chain?

Thanks

Front and rear derailleurs can be used interchangeably between 9- and 10-speed set-ups. The derailleurs have an infinite range of motion (controlled by the cable pull), while shifters and cassettes/chainrings are indexed (and will be unique to 9- or 10-speed). From what I hear from those who have tried, there is no problem using either chain as well (although the spaces in the front derailleur are certainly open to greater tolerances than those in the rear).

I have a boxed XT front derailleur available (high clamp, dual pull), as well as older, used XT front and rear derailleurs (low clamp, top pull FD and normal and rapid rise RD's). If you're interested, drop me a PM.

I used an xt 10 speed front derailleur with a 3x9 setup for a while and had endless hassles with the chain catching the f/d. I suppose it depends on your specific situation i.e. which chain you are using etc.

I changed the derailleur and the problem was solved.

I recently changed the F/D on my sons bike due to an upgrade in the frame. Currently running a 9spd setup with a 10spd F/D with absolutely no hassles. I have a 9spd Tiagra F/D should you be interested.

Where you will have a hassle is trying to fit a 2x10 derailleur to a 3 ring setup up front but 3x9 should work without any hassles as the range of movement is the same over the 3 rings. Just be aware of the maximum number of teeth your FD can handle, most 3x9 can handle more than 3x10 so it's more fitting the other way around that becomes a hassle.
