Greetings wise hubbers,

I recently acquired a second-hand fork for my bike (Manitou Minute). This fork has Post Mounts for the brake calipers (a new thing for me).

Now here's my problem - the thread inside one of the post mounts seems to be mostly stripped. The bolt screws in fine, but continues to turn when it is fully into the mount (but cannot be pulled out and has to be screwed out). I didn't think this would be a major problem, but on both rides I have taken the fork, I have lost the caliper bolt from that mount (presumably they just get shaken loose on the ride). On the second ride, I used a new bolt with some of that paint on that I think it supposed to help secure the bolt, but there was the same result.

Any suggestions on how to sort this out? I am loathed to glue/putty a bolt into the mount, as this eliminates the adjustibilty of the mounts and is something of a commitment :P Can a bike shop re-tap the threads? Any ideas on how much this would cost?

Any experience/advice that can be offered will be appreciated :)

You need an engineering shop to put an insert in the old thread - what they will use depends on how bad it is.

Helicoil if not too much damage, or somethng like a timesert if there is a more damage.

Here is a picture of a timesert so you get the idea - there are multiple lengths and thread combinations available - don't do this yourself unless you know what you are doing - if you get the insert skew, you are going to have a BIG problem..

Their website is www.timesert.com, but I get an HTTP 403 error...
