Back to the OP's questions.

 

Food is what they need, not supliments.

Some of us race 6-8hrs on liquids and Gu's, but we have got used to it over time.

 

At 14 they must have solids in their somaches.

So, as a few have said before.

Potatoes, eggs and penut butter sarmies in the transition, and have salt availible, their bodies will decide if they need that or not.

On route - dried fruit, nuts, biltong.

 

and honestly water is fine if you are eating, you don't need to drop coin on fancy drinks
