Back Problems??

Hey Guys,

I seem to be having some issues with my back, i dont know if anyone else could point me in the right direction or recommend anyone? ive gone the route of MRIs, "specialists" and they all like, "yeh just give it time and it will heal"

So basically its hard to pin point (either action cricket or Mtb/ bmx bails) but about 10 years ago i crushed or ruptured a disc in my lower back, which resulted in a pinched nerve... which as the specialist told me would heal no problems, after a while i gave up fighting with them... for the past few years i get this almost numb / hypersensative feeling in my arms, legs, and stomach, also when i move my head down and to the left i almost get this shock like feeling through my back ... which i can almost deal with but ...

Whenever i ride my back hurts like a b*@&^$ ...

Dunno if anyone experienced anything like this ...please lemme know, ta.

I can't comment on the medical side , the pain you are feeling in legs and arms, etc. But, to strengthen your back for cycling I can highly recommend a weekly session of Pilates. It has helped my lower back handle the hours in the saddle.

That does nto sound good, you are doing damage to that nerve....get it seen to.

No need to fusion, the can do a micro-disctectomy and just remove the bits that is sitting on the nerves.

I would have that seen to asap.

Hi....... There was a long thread a while back on this topic..... I ruptured 2 discs in April and had an emergency fusion,my legs both used to go lame, believe me,if your discs are worn or degenerating,no amount of core strengthening will help, and nerve tissue, like brain tissue does not regrow!! See a specialist, have a CAT scan..... I had a fusion and feel awesome,I am on the bike again and actually feel worse if I don't ride! My lower back is stiff but no pain or lame legs anymore...... The op is *** but mine was a success! Gimme a shout if you wanna chat. 0832339674

Has your bike been setup properly to make it easier when you are riding. Wont solve your pain in general but might make your riding more enjoyable.

Hi

I am currently recovering after discectomy done on 7/8/2012. I have done a lot of research on the topic over the past weeks. From the symptoms you are describing it does not sound to me if your problem is in your lower back. You might have had a pinched nerve in your lower back, but that causes pain in the glutes hamstring and calve of one leg. The origin of the pain you are describing is much higher in the upper back or even neck. My advice: make an appointment with a neurosurgeon ASAP. One of the best is Dr Nel jnr in Pta, can also recommend Dr Alldrich in Pta, but I am quit sure there is good ones in Jozi to. These Dr's all have long waiting lists, so better to phone a few to try and get an appointment. While waiting for an appointment it might be worth your while to visit a good Physio or biokineticist or some one specialising in sport injuries. There is a very good practice in Potch that combines both disciplines. But you must have it checked out by a neurosurgeon. The longer one of these peripheral nerves are trapped the higher the chance of permanent damage. You can PM me and I will gladly contact you by mail or phone if you want more info.

Hi

I feel your pain.

I am currently trying to get rid of my lower back pain. Also went the route of physio, GPs, scans, specialist, Ortho, NO LUCK. Spoke to a friend who works for SpineAlighn, recommeded a Chiro. Had three sessions in a week and so far so good. I still have to stretch often though.

Give Chiro a shot, its cheaper than a Nuero surgeon ande worth the shot.

I had a lot of lower back problems to the point that at the Isuzu 3 towers race two years ago I could not walk after getting off the bike each day.I went to a Chiro in Pta and after 3 months of fairly intensive treatment the problem was solved. now i go once every 4 months just to maintain and I do pilates for the core and it seams to be working.

One place to go. Dr Ulrich Hahnle at Linksfield.

AGREED - he operated on me last year March and replaced L3/4 & L4/5 (not a fusion). I had severe back pain and couldn't walk the last 4 days before my op. July 2011 I was back on my bike (gently) and so began the road to recovery. I have done many rides since then - including Sani2C this year. I feel great and best of all no back pain.

Hey Sniffie. I had a discectomy 6 weeks ago.

How long after your discectomy could you get back to riding your bike, and is it uncomfortable? Same with running?

Thanks

For about a week I had pain in my legs and sensation in my arms, stayed of the bike for 10 days thinking I had pushed myself to hard. A week later nothing changed so whent to the doctor had scans on my lower back said there is nothing wrong could not find anything wrong gave me some pain killers. Well that was a waste of time and money. So I went to my chiropractor had two sessions and problem sorted. Give a chiropractor a go ,if you have ex rays take them along.

Well said! Its great to see a move towards using Chiropractors for injury treatment and prevention. If anyone needs a Chiro contact me, Jaidan on 0117840052/54.
