Whats The Point???????

Unfortunately the human condition is such that our behavior always escalates to the point where someone has to step in and save us from ourselves.

My wife councils drug addicts and their main gripe is that no-one trusts them. But the fact is they can't be trusted. Humanity in general is exactly the same.

Unfortunately all too true, not only re. conservation and cycling, but about humankind (and it seems especially South Africans). Think of how many times we have stepped on the brink (Adolf, Stalin....) and then "miraculously" turned away from it thanks to the few reasonable people (Nelson, Ghandi...). Sadly, we do need saving from ourselves from time to time.

(Didn't figure you for a phylosopher Omega, but then we all are full of surprizes.)

I watched a program on the dish the other night I think it was called monster fish, not the one that comes on discovery this was on animal planet or nat geo wild. I was amazed to see the devastation in the rain forest, the dude was in bolivia and the town/area he was in one could not recognize a river, instead it was an open mine filled with mud and a huge dredger. All they mine there was gold flakes!!!

SANParks stated mission: To develop, manage and promote a system of national parks that represents the biodiversity and heritage assets by applying best practice, environmental justice, benefit sharing and sustainable use.

Unfortunately the chops that run it haven't read this; they seem to think that they should simply police and prevent rather than facilitate responsible and controlled access for the public.

They run the parks like they are their personal fiefdom, when they are actually there for all South Africans. They are simply the managers.

I hear you. And no-one bitches about Sanparks more than I do. But can you imagine the alternative? Let's say the control of the land was handed over to politicians (Think big shiny face, MAAAAASSSIVE boep and black SUV). I guarantee that Rhino would in fact be extict. Tokai would be a high end golf estate and the kruger would have been open cast mined till there was nothig left but a hole in the ground the size of Ireland. You see, your statement had the word sustainable in it. Any other body would have the word profit or consumption in it.

I'd say on balance they are doing a great job. They are in an almost impossible position of generating money AND allowing for the use of something that they are custodians of.
