Quick question for the techies...Just measured my chain and it is between 1/16 and 1/8 stretched....should I be able to just replace the chain without needing to replace chainrings and cluster?

 

Google tells me it should be ok and if it was 1/8 stretched It should stIll be ok...but the new chain might wear faster

Cant seem to find it but Andre ZA did a great little sketch for that thread to illustrate what you are asking.

 

In a nutshell, 1/16 chain worn, replace. 1/8, chain worn and has damaged cassette which will damage new chain hence replace both.

Very seldom you will need to replace cluster and chain rings even if your chain is very worn.

 

It is more often a problem when you change from a worn cassette to a new one and your chain is in good condition as it will make a noise.

 

If the new chain shifts correctly don't even bother with the cassette and chain rings. Just wasting your money.

yeah thats what i read....mines sort of between the two 1.5/16....i think i am gonna replace the chain only and see what transpires....

 

i will confess to not searching as i was on my phone (so apologies if it was sticky)

Good idea. If the cassette is too worn, you will immediately experience chain slippage or jumping under strain, especially on your favourite gears that will be more worn out. I had some guru at a bike shop tell me to just carry on riding until the chain stretched enough the jumping stopped. It didn't work, eventually broke the chain going up a steep hill. If the new chain slips, change your old cassette as well and save yourself a lot of cr@p.... absolutely no fun to have a chain jump and slip while you are trying to power up a steep incline. 'nuff said.

Is your gears slipping? Don't believe the BS you read on the net. replace the chain when it breaks

still shifting perfectly.

 

i have never had a chain break - so dont know if i would wait for that.....

Do yourself and us a favour - ride that drivtrain for as long as you can!! I'm currently doing just thta...you wouldn't believe it but I'm getting plenty more km's out of my drivetrain...past a thousand km's i'd guess.

I made the descision to carry on when I got to the 1/8 mark...and thought what the heck...I'll just replace the entire drive train when needed...and it is still not needed!!

no slipping & no breaking of chains either...I'm heavy and not nimble on the pedals either...

 

I guess not many okes will agree with my "experiment" but I'm pleasantly surprized at this stage...

Yeah, it's funny - I used to cycle to school, 20kms everyday and in 10 years never had to replace a drive train on any bikes - and the started cycling as a hobby and am being told that chains don't last...

right...after reading JB's article on chains i decided to opt for replacing the chain, and if it was slipping then i would i immediately take the new chain off and put the old one back on and ride it to death..... so went to buy a new chain and no-one has stock! need to wait 2 weeks......lets hope the 150km odd that i do between that time does not stuff it up more...

just to close off my question. Found a chain....put it on and at the very start (within first km) of my ride it slipped a couple of times putting big tension while climbing a hill...the rest of the time it was fine - and at points i was standing on the pedals while climbing.......didnt feel any jumps.....should be fine? yes/no?

 

i put the jumps in the very beginning down to all the links in the new chain getting properly tensioned (could all be bs of course!)
