I would say that when a brand in handmade in country of origin, then that is a rather big qualifier for being considered boutique

I just purely gauge it on number of units around town and trails. This doesn't mean they are better bikes...just rare / boutique / not common. For me morewood is defnitely not boutique, used to be though...not anymore imo

Comparing VPP(luke's tallboy) against ABP(my trek GF)...VPP is the one.

I'll have to take your word for it. :D But glad to hear you think so.

just remember that the number of bikes you see on the trails is all relative to where you are.

Morewoods may be pretty common in SA (and I'd venture to guess that more than half the Morewoods in SA are Zulas)... but worldwide they're considered "boutique"

Just like Canyon/Cube/Lapierre migh be rare here... on a grand scale their manufacturing numbers are quie high.

So I guess the question is, are we talking "boutique" globally, or just locally?!

All the bikes here are nice, but cmon would you really buy a bike called a foes in SA, you know where that is going to end up!

Even the logo could be mistaken at a quick glance

I have had both an ABP bike and a VPP bike and the ride is almost the same, the VPP is more suppel but the ABP gives the best traction on steep decents while braking.

I think it was mentioned on another thread as well - if I had one, I would be so tempted to fill in the missing line on the f.

Interesting point even in SA some brands are "more" boutique depending on your region. Like in natal(klapped holla last weekend), there were more morewoods(yes zulas) than freakin silverbacks. But then again silverback might be considered boutique in the UK. One man's boutique is another's PEP.

Forgot about Lapierre, always wanted to try a zesty....gets great reviews in MBUK and Bikeradar

True but this is only a problem if you roll the car, and if you do roll the car you might actually deserve the title.

Yup, and here in Gauteng Trek Superflies and Scott Spark 29ers are the PEP bikes

But really, bikes like Yeti are more common here because the sole agent is JHB based, and KZN have tons of Zulas cos peeps are showing patriotism towards their home province
