Ok guys after this last weekends tragedy I think something needs to be done in Pe to raise awareness of cyclists on the road. So I have a few questions with regards to organising mass gatherings for cyclists and maybe the guys who have organised CM in their cities can maybe help out here

1) is the critical mass the way to go in this instance?

2) how do you decide on a route and what distances and what is a good pace. I know it should be very slow

3) could someone maybe explain exactly what the whole history is behind CM and also explain what message you are trying to get across etc

4) should we inform any authorities about this?

5) what numbers normally attend this

Sorry if these questions are stupid but we a bit slow here in Pe. I have a slight idea what it's about but if we were to organise this in Pe I would have to be able to explain to the folk exactly what the idea of all this is and what the aim is

I feel it is important we do something like this because since Pe started hosting the Ironman there have been a lot more cyclists on the road and the Pe drivers haven't always taken kindly to this

If there are a few Pe Hubbard that want to get involved that would be great

Thanks

Fabes

Haven't read any subsequent posts but here's my take on CM Jo'burg.

It's a fun night out on the bike. Really cool to see so many cyclists turn up in a fantastic mood. The ride splinters very quickly and is difficult to control with such good attendance. Jumping robots, disobeying traffic laws and pissing off motorists (a large number to enjoy the show though) becomes a common occurence. The party at the end is pretty cool. Does it send a message? I'm not so sure. Is it fun? Definitely. Will I ride again? Yes? Will I get mates to tag along? Yes.

Would I recommend you try start it up in PE? Most definitely.

There is this page....not sure if you know of it?

I would prefer it to be something of a ride for a reason, not some social event. Myself and a few buds would drive up from Jbay to join, but the purpose needs to be to create awareness

Hi Daloco, you see it's a tough one trying to organise this. My wife and i decided we will try and get this going and we have very little experience in organising events so we are a little scared of organising a flop of an event.

The reason we have decided to do this is because we feel we do need to create an awareness of cyclists on the road in the Pe area. So far we have gone with the idea of the whole critical mass thing in the hope of getting more cyclists to an event.

If you have any ideas of how we can make the first ride for a reason as mentioned that would be great.

I think it's more a case of creating goodwill rather than awareness. They know there are cyclists on the road, what we need is for people not to be annoyed at the first sight of us.

Maybe a toy run or something like that so we can have a feel good vibe around the cyclists? The next time people see a cyclist they might just be a bit more patient and understanding.

I think showtime might be on a good idea, perhaps riding in a slow peloton with vehicles displaying banners highlighting the cause leading and following the cylists....

Was thinking t-shirts for the cyclists, but that is not visible enough, and costly. It will be a slow ride so t-shirts will be ok....

And while we're on a roll. Perhaps we can do this in solidarity of those who commute to work on bikes as there only option of transport. I'm not sure how to get some of them along but making a contribution to there safety would be a very worthy cause for me.
