But have recently been riding in the rain to work so I might need to replace it sooner than expected which is okay as I would rather do that than replace my cassette and chainrings.

from the mountain bike side it's definitely not a con,it all wears at the same rate,but I'm new to the road stuff where you have no mud and grit so you obviously have far less wear on components

what do you want me to explain?,that there is less dirt and grime when riding on the road compared to mountain biking or that your drive train components wear at the same rate.
