I have a new SID fork and there is play in the bushings.

 

I'm a well experienced DIY bike mech servicing my own bikes for more than 20 years and I've checked the usual suspects.

 

I've ensured the headset is properly tightened and the brake caliper is properly tight. The rotor is tight as is the thru axle on the hub.

 

I have another Reba that I've ridden for 8 months and it has no play at all.

 

so what to do?

All suspension forks have bushing play from day one, otherwise they'll have too much stiction. I doubt that your other Reba has none. Check again.

 

Bushings wear so slowly that they require replacement extremely seldom. I won't worry about it at all.

Johan I appreciate that they all have some play, however it is very noticeable when riding technical track as I tap onto the brakes I have that distinct headset-is-loose knock. if I lift the front of the bike a few inches and drop it onto a hard floor I get that headset-is-loose knock too...it seems excessive compared to manitou, fox and the reba forks I have owned previously.

 

(FYI the fork is brand spanking new)

 

Berg Bok: I checked the thru-axle as per the thread you mentioned, its tight.

Try the following n

 

Hold your hand around the top part of the fork lowers. More or less where the the fork brace is.

 

Grab the front brake and rock the bike forward and backwards. If you feel an excessive amount of knocking its best the fork goes back to the shop to be tested.

SIR Maxxis I did that and that is where the greatest amount of 'knocking' seems to be....I will be taking it back to the shop

 

FYI knocking is noticeably more on the damper side than the air spring side

OK, sounds like you do have a problem. Since the fork is new, your quickest solution would be to get the bike shop to quickly swap the lowers with that from another new fork. IIRC, you are in Cape Town, so the agent is right there by you.

 

It would be interesting to see how they could screw up something as simple as a bushing, since it is such a simple part. Perhaps one of the two is completely missing?
