The units are set with Auto lap on every 8km sometimes even 1km by default (odd number anyway)

8km = 5 miles, so that might explain that one. This does help to explain why the Garmin of the guy next to me at the 94.7 kept on beeping at odd times every few km.

ok ... sorry ...

I seem to recall there was an option to do both (although that might have been for power only).

No Slow, only zones 1 - 5 not as %. The display is limited to actual heart rate in beats or % where you can use % of actual max or % of HRR which is max less resting heart rate. Maybe Tankman knows what this means.

Edit: You can display zone and heart rate together but not heart rate and %. Zone can be shown in a graph.

thanks petatodd !

but now rouxtjie - describe how to that dark art thing of getting both displayed ?

I dont have my unit in front of me...that would have helped alot but if I remember correctly when you switch the device on the first time you are prompted for a whole lot of info...age, weight blah blah...one of them are max HR, in my case 187. Once all of that is completed you can then navigate to the screen setup or layout of your device. You can then you what you want to display on the 3 pages and also if you want them to rotate based on a timed event.

Go to page one and select which metrics you want to display, you can choose up to 8 per page. In the list of available options is a oukie called HR%...choose that one. That is the one you want. I have my HR in bpm and my HR% next to each other on page 1. You can also choose where in the layout(8 blocks available you want it which is quite nice) Also if you only choose three metrics lets say speed, time and meters climbed, they will automatically display bigger depending on your placement.

google be your friend, with the 705 you can only display HR as either BPM or %, not both, and lots of discussion about how the unit works out %. So I will just stick to BPM and the zone number.

If you can work out your BPM as a % while riding you're not going hard enough....

I can never work out why guys use BPM, it's totally irrellevant to anything to do with a bike. Zones or % are what counts in telling you how your ride is going.

"Ooh, my heart rate is 160" Big deal, so what? At 160 you may be at 95% (going pretty hard to almost dead) or you may be at 74% (just cruising in the fat burning endurance zone).

But then I don't work in a bike shop and call an "install" the act of putting on a few O-rings and 3 cable ties assuming the client has bought the cadence sensor. What about the speed sensor and the wheel magnet? Is that really necessary to add to the "install" on the Egde 500? And I also don't go around calling guys "tjop" as it's a pretty ineffective insult.

Yes, I see it is so ineffective that this is now the second time you are referring back to it!

Lets get on thing straight ... I part with my knowledge and experience on these units (been riding with Garmin units for over 7 years now) free of charge so that people can better understand, appreciate and value the product.

If you cant appreciate that ... you can suck my chain.

Im over this fred now.

Tankman

I got the Edge 500, I just bought my wife one also, what should I keep in mind when setting them up, don't want the wives speed/cadence sensor talking to mine and vice versa.
