Proper Cleaning after a mud event.....

It was very good. Johan explains the why's and wherefores so that you understand how the bike works. Stripped my mtb down at every component and other then the actual fork and the spokes, but having totally removed, inspected and cleaned my derailleurs I will never again use any wax type lube. Dumped a bottle of squit and about 1/4 bottle white lightning in the bin when I got home. Drop him an email for info johan@yellowsaddle.co.za

Was there still people using Squirt!!eek.gif

I never liked Squirt in anyway but please elaborate why you dumped the bottle and while you at it, mentioned what product you using instead now.

I used squirt, but I now use a product called Go (similar wax based solution but R160 for 500ml) from Bearing Man. But I also clean and lube my chain after every ride (average rides are around 30km) and every 3-4 rides (depending on riding conditions) I thoroughly clean the chain in a solution of hot water and sunlight, hang out to dry and relube. And I have no problems. The wax does build up but its a 2 minute job with a flat screwdriver to clean off the jockey wheels. I tried using gearbox oil and normal engine oil on my bike but it creates one sticky mucky mess! BUT i dont ride in the rain and mud unless I get caught out on a ride!

I also usually clean my chain on a regular basis and have it *looking* clean and shiny. The shocker was what was hidden inside the bits and pieces of derailleur and the jockey, not just the visible from outside and reachable by screwdriver bits. Having actually dismantled it all and seen it all for myself I will never use ANY dry/wax type lube. I don't use that junk on my motorbikes, now I know why I shouldn't use it on my bicycles either.
