what do the informed people say? can i still ride with this crack in the shaft? the crack hasn't completely penetrated to sidewall of the shaft yet...

the shaft has a 1" diameter and there's a spacer between the shaft and the stem so that a 1'1/8" stems fit on it.

Yikes ..... lyk sleg.... as jy so kraak op jou kar se wishbone kry sal jy verder met hom ry.

Remember carbon breaks ...snap....crackle .......pop!!!!!!!

uh, just got the bike from a friend, don't know what the make is. But I'm very sure he didn't cut it himself...was probably like that when he bought the bike used a while ago.

Looks like a bit of a hatchet job on cutting the steerer tube.  With the shim taking most of the force it should be okay for a while but I wouldn't chance it unless you want to see if you can handle a broken steerer tube better than Hincapie.

Listen to me...do not ride with it again. Replace it. Or you will be replacing teeth in the near future.

A crack no matter how small is not good...and with the strain and weight resting on the fork during a ride, its only gonna get worse.

Yup and Hincapie was lucky. He was on a fairly flat stretch of road. In the Cape there are high cliffs!!!!!!!

Listen to me...

I am, I am!

ok, won't ride it then. not too bad actually - the roads around Stellenboshc would see me bored after 20 k's againSmile

I'll stick to the MTB then!

I didnt say they have to replace...but you will have to.

What fork is it? Did you cut it yourself?

if still of interest it is a pinarello carbonfibre fork.

Fandacious: there goes the ride I could have done with you!
