Haha, didn't side step anything, but rather slipped under. It did go through to Customs and they passed it on with a it No Charge sticker. I import a lot of things, bike stuff and car parts, certain thing get away duty and VAT free, usually due to the fact that their value is less than the thresh hold SARS have.

 

When I imported my previous helmet (last week), along with a bunch of other stuff, total value was R1700, I paid duties and VAT on everything.

 

I am all for supporting local companies and creating jobs, but until the local online co's start giving us prices that are competitive, I will keep importing. Although thumbs up to Easybike and CWC as some of their specials are superb.

Then you clearly did not declare it as a helmet...

 

But don't take my word for it - there are a few Hubbers that works at customs as well as clearing agents on here.

 

Next time you might not be so lucky...

 

I'll post a scan of the customs docs so you can see, definitely says Helmet. And was processed by customs, has customs sticker on as well.
