i`ve been looking for a wheelset to go with my rig. i`ve herd good things about the nuke proof sets on CRC, and then of course there are the more expensive hope builds ( some colourful hubs will be pricey although rther good looking )

any suggestions on a good inexpensive set?

I have a set of the nukeproofs and they seem pretty good. I haven't had alot of riding on them but my front wheel survived quite a hard bail with no prob.

I'd say if you have the cash now build up a strong set on hopes. They will last long and you can make them as pretty as you like. Also maybe search some of the wheel building topics on hear for info on what to use if you are going to build up your own wheel.

Otherwise, I have a set of Da Bomb revolver wheels like so...

...which I love to death but I think CRC is sold out of them. These guys are bombproofthumbup1.gif

those wheels look awesome! yeah i was looking at the parts hubs/rims/spokes on CRC it certainly seems cheaper getting the parts and then sending them to a wheel builder.

the Nukeproofs are going on a super cheap sale price so i may just go that way instead, thanks for the tips!

cheers

Nuke Proofs are impressively strong for their weight/price. I run them on my dirt jump bike. I have however had a slight hiccup with the rear hub where 1 of the engagement boints slips. Not a major issue though.

Sun Ringle MTX 29 rims (what the Nuke Proofs use) are strong... but not indestructable. 29mm is a race wheel width but possibly too narro fro a full on DH "huck wheel" set.

just a thought, have you had or know anyone who has been using the Shimano Zee Hubs? they are very weel priced on CRC at the moment.

DON'T DO IT!!! excl.png nuke.gif eek.gif

ok, maybe not that dramaric, but remember that Shimano hubs use cup-and-cone bearings which I think were last used by the voortrekkers on their wagons. My advice... get hubs with sealed cartige bearings! Way less hassle.

I see there's a set of Spank Spikes for sale in the classifieds at the mo.

yup, this set

I have seen them in person. Great condition. Bargain price for Spank-Hopes

thanks was wondering why the are so cheap, would not go that way now. cause i`d like my wheel to last a while. 9/10 times peopel are recommending the hope hubs / with a decent rim, and with good reason if you wont have to buy another wheel set for a while it seems like a much more worthwhile option.

now i just need to byt vas and make a purchase!

shot for the advice

Superstar Components has a sale on wheelsets at the moment. I paid under €180 for a DH wheelset last week. If the wheels are as strong as the AM wheelset I've been rocking on my old Morewood, they should last for ever.

You forgot to tell him that you have to pay 100 pounds to get them here.

Yeah, sadly we are not as fortunate as Hog (who resides on Europe) so if we order any large items from Superstar, we get nailed on shipping.

That said... I currently have some Trizoid hubs (from Superstar) being laced to Dartmoor rims (from Dial) with DT Swiss Competition spokes (from CRC) :D

Off topic:

Nice I also just grabbed some of those dartmoor rims from dial'd. They are nice. What colour did you get as we all know black rims would not go anywhere near your rides. Oh and who is building them up for you?

On topic:

Yeah superstar wanted to charge me like a 100 Pounds for shipping on a chain device and set of wheels that only came to 130 pounds. This put me off the purchase.

i have just built up a set of wheel for my AM bike, am not sure if they will afll inot AM/Trail or downhill wheels but cost me about 5k to build up.

the wheels are as follows:

1) hope pro Evo 2 front and rear hubs: R3100 from International Trade ( big thanks to Jason)

2) Dartmoor Raider Rims: R800 from Diald Bikes in CT

3) spokes and build R1150 ( Jason assisted with the build, not sure of the Spokes but have held up to a few jumps and some very rough riding with no issues at all)

as i say not sure which category they fit into as the hubs are considered downhill and so are the rims in some circles but not in others.

may be what you are looking for or not, me i love them.

I went with the green option from Diald. Got some black hubs, green seatpost and green stem from Superstar. Getting them built by Solomons Woodmead. I heard they have a good builder. R150/wheel. I provided spokes, nipples etc. Local prices on spokes are insanely high.

As for Superstar shipping... it was the wheels that put your shipping up. Smaller items, like the chainguide, only have a 5 pound shipping fee. It's UPS too, so mine was here in 4 days.

Yeah I bought wheels from superstar and got NAILED on delivery. And then on top of that I still had to pay VAT on the delivery and the items. On the upside the wheels were still significantly cheaper than the CRC equivalents.
