I'm looking at getting myself a pair of fiveten's and some flats.

There is a normal shoe, and a clipless version, I would like the clipless version, as then I can also use them with my cb mallets too

So the question I have is:

Would the clipless shoes be good to use with normal flat pedals or would it be better to get the shoes with the normal soles?

I was chatting to the guys from dial'd bikes about exactly this issue and they advised that the normal soled shoes are more comfortable with flat pedals than those that are cleat compatible. apparently the clipless shoes have a hard insert for cleat installation, and that is not as comfortable on flat pedals.

but drop them an email. I found them to be extremely helpful in answering all my questions

Normal soles for flats. I find the freeriders the best as you can feel what's going on through the sole. The karvers etc have a very thick sole, so you don't have any feel. The Minaars are seriously heavy. Have only ridden them with clips, so don't know how they will feel on flats. The sole is very stiff, so I guess it will feel a little more sterile than the freeriders (which have quite a bit of give, just like normal trainers.)

FiveTen's are brilliant riding shoes for flats though. You can't go wrong.

Thanks everyone for the Info..

I was actually looking on diald bikes website, they dont have stock of the freerider in my size :( I'll drop them a mail though and find out when they will be in stock.

Now just need to figure out which flats. So far I'm liking the Deity decoy 2.5's and the Nukeproof Nuetron's - any other suggestions?

Oh, one more question. Whats the fit like on the fivetens? Do I get the same size as I usually wear, or is it better to size 1 up?

Nukeproof Neutrons. best bang for your buck.

Thanks Anine, those are the ones I'm leaning towards. Diald just don't have stock of the black ones at the mo :(

they told me the sizing is spot on but that the shoe runs a bit narrow

yup, plus one on that! I run Neutrons on all my bikes, with a set of Mallets to be used periodically on the AM bike (when SAPO finally delivers my FiveTem Maltese Falcons).

The nice thing about Neutrons is no centre pins, so your shoes will last longer. And no, the lack of centre pins does not compromise grip.

I currently have 3 pairs of FiveTens. (2 basic shape varients).

This is what I have found:

The Freerider based shoes (ie. Freerider, Freerider Pro, Danny MacAskill Edition and Barron) have a skate shoe fit. If you wear a size 9 skate shoe, a size 9 Freerider will be perfect).

The Impact Low based shoes (ie. Impact Low, Karver and Sam Hill Edition) feel a lot more cumbersome. I got my Sam Hills in a 9. They feel quite a lot bigger inside than my Barons (also 9). They're quite a bit heavier. And like Daft Vader said, they don't give as much feel as the Freerider types.

My recomendation would be a Freerider varient. The soles aren't as stiff as Impacts, but stiff enough to offer adequate support.

As for the SPD's, I'll have to report back on the Maltese Falcons once they arrive and I've ridden them a bit

I prefer straitlines. But Nukeproofs are excellent too

Straightlines are for rich people  haha!

Hi guys, figured I could post this here...

I am looking for clipless shoes (on a budget) to use with Shimano DX pedals. What shoes should I look at?
