yup, another "is this a crack" thread.

Discovered this under the headtube of my Silverback Road bike a few weeks back.Took it to the LBS where i bought it and the rep apparently came round and took a pic - feedback from the store says looks like gel coat - come back in January when the repair guy is back from holiday or whatever.

The store marked it with the two lines to see if the crack will spread (i have only ridden the bike 3 times since - around 180 kms) if it spreads they will replace it. if not they will repaint. The main crack has not spread, but when i had a look halfway through a ride this am - i could see a very fine new one coming off the side. i cleaned it when i got home and its not as visible anymore - but if i run my fingernail across it i can definitely feel a ridge.

Now to be honest im pretty freaked out by the thought of riding a frame that has a covered up stress fracture. From what i can see theres more to it than just a crack in the Gel Coat - but i guess it's case of my word vs there's.

Any thoughts?

Take it for a second opinion. From what I've read, Silverback are top notch with regard to warranty issues, however, they will obviously go on the rep's opinion. He may be wrong.

Paint normally cracks in areas where there is a degree of flex. i would imagine that a paint crack in that spot would appear horizontally and not vertically.

My sons Silverback Space frame had a very similar crack at the seat tube / top tube intersection ( along the top). Silverback had no problem replacing the frame and to date the replacement frame in fine after nearly 1 year. His frame crack on the 1st ride.

That looks like a crack to me, you can see the crack is black from filling up with carbon dust...even underneath you can see some dark lines running the other way.

Good day sir,

Just to give you feedback. I am the portfolio manager that had a look at your bike at the shop. I just want to inform you that the bike is being collected from the shop and sent down to cape town to the South African head quarters for the product team to inspect the frame. They will then liaise with our factory's in Asia.

We will give you feedback as soon as we can. Thanks for your patience it is much appreciated.

My email address is daniel@silverbacklab.com if you need any other assistance.

Kind Regards

Daniel Hattingh

Hi Walker

Was it in the front of the seat post, something like this?

Silverback Storm 1, 2013 model.

Its a weird place/direction to get a crack? (I would have thought the crack would be horizontal)

I still have 2 cm left on the printed ruler on the back of the seat post. (95-100 kg)
