You get one bag for the cycle leg, one for the run and you can only access each bag once. You're correct about receiving outside help - you are not allowed to get food, clothes, spares from spectators. If you do put clothes in your run/cycle bags, be sure to collect them even if you don't need them on race day. Special needs bags are all thrown away. You will not be able to track your bag down.

Don't forget, you can keep your warm top in your run transition bag and take it at the start of the run if you wish. If you decide to leave it, you will not lose your warm gear as you still get your transition bags back after the race.

Aha - cheers - ok so there are 2 special needs bags - 1 for run and one for cycle - that makes sense. In that case I will be inclined to take my own nutrition as far as possible and top up with gu's.

Will have to think about warm clothes - would have been nice to leave a jacket in the run special needs for just in case (as it gets later) - but not so much if you can't get it back if you dont use it...

Re special needs bag - can someone explain exactly how much access you have to this on the bike and run? Think I heard you can only access it once during the ride - which seems stange to me?

Also is it correct that family cannot give you warm clothes etc later on (for those of us who would be running well into the April night) so you would have to leave this in special needs bag too? (which would be fine as long as you can access it during the run...)

You have 2 special needs bags: 1 for the run and 1 for the bike.

You can only access each of the two bags once (you can't give them back and get them again later), but you pass the special needs area 3 times on the bike (after 60km, 120km and 180km) and 3 times on the run (after 5km, 19km and 33km).

I packed a lot of stuff in both my bags, but found the on-course nutrition was sufficient and never accessed one of them. I won't be packing a special needs bag again next year.

You are correct in saying that family/friends can't give you any clothes as that would constitute outside help resulting in a disqualification.

If you know you're going to take a long time to complete the race, you can leave a top in the special needs bag and get it whenever it starts getting cold. If you're planning on taking more than 13 hours, it might not be a bad plan to do so.

Ja I wouldn't exactly plan to go slow 11 months out, but, realistically, proabably will be...

My main thinking for keeping with my own nutriian is I am using 32GI and would like something equally low GI to sustain me for the full day. Would only start taking Gu's into the run. do they have Gu Roctane on the course which is I think a bit lower GI than Gu Bru?

They do have Gu Roctane at some of the waterpoints on the run, but not everyone. Think it was the 2nd and the 4th, but don't quote me on it.
