I want to know how many chain links one should have when running a 2x10

Many of methods. Check online for help.

My most used method is over(around) largest chainring over(around) largest cog on cassette add plus 1 full link. Plus 1 link is 2 (inner and outer link)

Ps should not run thru rear mech. Also shift your front mech up makes it slightly easier.

Another would be, provided your old chain is not badly stretched (worn) and you haven't changed any ratios, match new chain to old chain.

Correction, the correct term is outer and inner plates
