I'm sure there are those of you out there who have done something like this before but I haven...I am wanting to buy a wheelset from someone in the free state and I am in CT what is the best way of getting them here and what would it cost the wheels are about 2kg..

Pay a little bit more and use a reputable (or even not so reputable) courier.

You likely to get your wheels quicker and with a lot less hassle, at a small premium over normal postal service.

Probably ± R300 - R400.

I hate to state the obvious - but why bot ask if there are any hubbers who travel up and down to Bloem ? I am sure there are a few who do the trip ?

Unless of course you cannot wait and want to spend the money.

I for one will never buy secondhand wheels if I did not have the opportunity to inspect them myself. Just say the previous owner did not look after the wheels and never greased the bearings?

Go and look here, make your own choices and import a new wheelset....

What effect would the bearings have on the actual wheel?

Possibly ruined cones and cups in the hubs. The OP stuffed up his own wheelset that way, that is why he needs a new wheelset.

I've never had a problem with the PO, just pack really well and insure the package.

But now with volumetric all the fun is over, I used to rock up there with any size box safe in the knowledge the item wasn't to heavy. Now a 1,6kg set of wheels will cost about 5 times more to post, albeit probably still not nearly as expensive as a courier but then have to wait 5 business days and collect at the PO.

thanks for all the advice guys but I had to call off the deal .. A week or so ago my youngest kid (6yrs) crushed his fingers under a rock and needed emergancy surgery to fix them up ...got some of the bills this morning and you can guess ..not all covered by medical aid either ..micro surgery = macro bills ..so I won't be buying any bike bits for a little while ..solves the problem with the hubs though I just grease them and ride them until they seize...
