Anyone have brake mounts faced, I could swear the pads are not hitting the rotors square on my Morewood shova which has IS mounts on the Revelation fork and frame, more noticeable on the front fork than back.

Apparently IS mounts do typically need facing more often than post mount.

How much does facing typically cost per mount, is it really needed/worth it? I would imagine with mass produced parts like forks a good mount facing may be vital!

Shine a torch from below the caliper and look from the top - you should be able to see how parallel and square the caliper is to the rotor.

I've had one or two direct mount posts that have paint drips on the corners. A quick wipe with some sandpaper has sorted it out. No need for facing in my opinion (the torch method above should finalise that though).

Lol the scientific method!!

Ja done that check already - not the most precise way of checking, my pads do not "appear" to be sitting 100% square, but then again to accurately check using that method you really do need to have a brand new rotor and new set of pads fitted.

Agreed - but there isn't a direct mount facing tool as far as I know....

Try swapping the orbital washers around a bit - sometimes they seems to get stuck and the freedo of movement is limited. There should be enough play in them to cope with an unfaced mount.

It is one of the most frustrating bits of the bikes to work on. Good luck!

Can you not use shims to make up the difference. I received a packet of different thickness shims with my Hope disks.

PM me if you think it can work. I can drop some in an envelope for you.

Thanks for the offer Big H, those shims are for IS to IS Hope Calipers, I'm running IS to Post mount Calipers using a IS to post mount adaptor.

Even if I had IS calipers, shims can't do what a facing will do, a facing will make sure the caliper is 100% square to the axle and the pads are running perfectly parallel to the rotor

So anyone actually had a brake mount faced before and noticed a difference in braking?

Is there any technique for accurately checking how square your brake mounts are using DIY tools?

We have done some facing here, yes there is an improvement in getting the brake properly set-up, especially on frames that run 142/12

I bought two Xt rotors 180mm, my rear one used to be 160mm the calliper is a post mount but Shimano doesn't have a post mount 180 mm adaptor? Do you know where I can get hold of one that will fit. The one I bought was
