I got a Mavic Crossride rear hoop with its original 9sp Mavic Crossride hub (circa 2009). I have heard that if you use a shim you can fit a 10sp cassette to a 9sp hub

Anyone know if this is possible with this particular hub though?

?

the 10s cassette fits in the same space a 9S cassette fits. Whats this about a shim? I think on some hubs there is a shim on the cassette close to the hub flange that can be removed to fit certain aftermaket cassettes

MTB 8, 9, and 10sp all have use the same size freehub body. It's just the spacing between cassette sprockets (and subsequently chain widths) that varies.

The only varients would be

  • 7sp (will require some spacers)
  • SS (will require some spacers)
  • XX1 11sp (will require a whole new hub, or at lease freehub body, depending on make and model of existing hub).

you will need new shifters and possibly jockey wheels in the rear derailleur cage. The 10s chain is narrower.

I know on Campagnolo its not an issue to run the 9s jockey wheels. Not sure about Shimano biut I suspect changing the jockey wheels will provide a shifting accuracy and drivetrain noise benefit

Thanks all...guess it was one of those comments I heard somewhere that I wasn't listening to properly (or shouldn't have been listening to at all :P)

You actually are meant to have a 1mm shim when using a 10 speed Shimano cassette. In most cases it wont be an issue not using one but the large sprocket on a 10 speed cassette is 1mm closer to the spokes than on a 9 speed cassette. There is a chance that your derailleur will touch the spokes without one.

But thats not on all Mavic wheels. If I recall it was only the Crossmax and Ksyrium SSC SL wheels that needed the shim but not if you used the Shimano freebody for the wheel.
