I would like to get some feedback on the do's and don'ts of tyre pressures. I started with mountain biking a few months ago and did my 3rd event this weekend.

I however would like some advice on what my tyre pressure should be for wet and dry conditions.

I ride a Giant 29er hardtail and I weigh 120kgs (working on this). Non tubeless setup. I hope someone can help with some data.

1st do a tubeless conversion, it will save you loads of trouble and prevent pinch flats. You should be able to use your existing tires as well. non tubeless and your weight you will probably be looking at about 2.2 bar, but I mat be wrong here.

tyres can sometimes be reused. I made the mistake of using non-tubeless tyres on my tubeless conversion and its painful. The tyres kept coming off the rims at the most inopportune time. I eventually switched to proper tubeless tyres and havent had any hassles since.

Get tekkies that are made for tubeless. CWC are running specials every so often.

 

I used plain Conti MKII tyres for my ghetto tubeless front and back.

Wasted a lot of time with the rear wheel which wouldn't hold air overnight, which made me regret being penny smart (saved R500) but pound foolish (lost many hours of riding).

 

Even though my front wheel is rock-solid, my next tyre purchase will be a tubeless tyre.

To give a response to the question asked:

 

Tyre pressure makes a huge difference to your ride; too hard, you get bounced off, too soft, the bike drags and is more prone to flats. At your weight on tubes i would start at 2.3-2.5 and see how it feels.

 

2 is going to be too low and 3 too high, unless you're on tar.

 

If you go tubeless you can take it down towards 2 or lower, depending on feel.
