Following advice found on the Hub, I went for a pair of Olympic Hurricanes available from Sportsman's Warehouse for R550. I think it's the best buy for under R1000 by miles. I've tried Specialized, Shimano, and there was a few more that I can't remember. The Olympics fit perfectly from the beginning, and they're still great after a few months. Remember you'll most likely have to buy cleats as well - budget for that.

Have to agree, they are the bargain of the century!  Very stiff, long lasting and they don't look dorky like other cheap mtb shoes.  For R550 you can't get better.

...but I do fancy a pair of Specialized mtb shoes at around R900 (I like the fit) when my Olymipic's finally die, but they have been going for two years and STILL don't want to go!

I agree with the olympics. I bought myself a pair 2 months and did my first mtb ride in Dec , the fit is comfortable and perfect if you need to walk up the hills ;-)

Not sure what they cost' date=' but the specialized are very comfortable, well worth the expense. [/quote']

fave pair is specialized. the olympics are comfy, but the velcro straps can be a bit long. for a little over a grand you can pick up the louis garneau montana. velly nice, velly comfortable?

Have to agree. I have mine now for 3 years, and still going strong.

I bought these for about R600:

Here they are going for about R1k.  Comfortable enough to walk around in all day and then ride home in the afternoon.  Tough enough for any MTb racing you might want to do.
