Hi Guys

I want to build a 1x9 or 1x10 setup. I will get myself a MRP 1X Chain guide to prevent dropping of the chain.

Now my question is:

I want to use a 34/36t chain ring in stead of the "standard" 32t. Will I need to lengthen a standard chain? I have never had to fit a chain myself other than on my SS. Also will it be different depending on the rear derailleur...if I use a short or long cage derailleur?

It will be. What seems to be the best is chain round front chainring and your biggest gear at the back. Tighten chain to 100%. Add 3 links onto that for perfect length. I have heard 2 and 4 links. I used that method plus 3. Perfect for me. The chain must also be running through the derailleur when you check length. Hope that makes sense.

Thanx it does make sense, I read a similar comment on another site.

So would I need to buy 2 chains to remove some of the 2nd one to add to the one that will be used?

No. A 10 speed chain will easily be long enough. I run a 34 front and 11-36 rear. For my 1X10. My next front chainring will be a 36. I run a clutch derailleur and a Wolf Tooth front blade. I do not use a guide and I have never dropped a chain. My brother has XX1 and he has had to fit a chain guide. Weird!!

Cool thanx, Will see what I decide then...

then you will need to replace the RD if you go wolf chainring and buying different size chaninrings becomes explensive on the wolf option, has been discussed recently regarding the pro/cons of going wolf chainring
