The outlet of water flowing via tunnels from the Katse Dam (Lesotho Highlands Water Project) is a few km outside Clarens. From here it runs to the Ash River, then onto the Liebenbergsvlei past Bethlehem, to the Wilge River near Frankfort from where it deposits into the Vaal Dam. Distance from Clarens to Vaal Dam (rough estimate) - 250km.

Has anybody ever done this on a canoe/kayak? Is it at all possible? Do you need permission to do this?

You can also contact Hugh from white water training- might be able to help. At the outlet there is a big sign that says nobody is allowed on the river, but can't believe that.

I seem to recall that somebody drowned at the outlet close to Clarens a few years ago and then tubing, canoeing was not allowed in that area. Lowe down at Bethlehem I often see people on canoes and kayak's
