an excellent article on Pinkbike about the UCI changes specifically with regard to the womens competition

http://www.pinkbike.com/news/snapshot-an-industry-view-on-the-uci-changes-announced-in-2016.html

this was my response to that article...interested to hear others

interesting viewpoint from both sides of the fence. I tend to agree that there needs to be more fire to qualify for the finals...but..you also don't want to detract women from participating and growing themselves. I think UCI does sometimes take some undue flack for what they do as it is very difficult to please everyone, and despite having made some horrendous decisions in the past...I am on the side of the fence that tends to agree that 15 spots and more points to compete will be beneficial to the sport for women...As long as there are sufficient and suitably competitive alternative events to get points and experience...time will tell

Thought I would just revive this again - and put up some statistics looking at how the ladies fields have grown since 2013 when this started

In KZN -

2013 - 5 provincial ladies of 60 riders

2015 - 8 provincial ladies of 75 riders

2018 - 13 provincial ladies of 81 riders

Also for progression to world cups

Beanie went to race internationally in 2017 at the IXS Rookies Cup, and is going again in 2018.

Charlotte Wolfson also went to race internationally at the IXS Rookies Cup.

And there is some new girl from Nelspruit who whipped Beanie last year at the nationals ... so there is definitely some growth in the ladies racing for sure.
