How long should a drivetrain last ?

It could be a silly question, but why would rotating 3 chains be better than changing the chain when it's fairly worn for a new one?

By rotating, everything wears at the same rate. By replacing the chain when worn, one goes from new to worn to new to worn... which isn't consistent in terms of interfacing with the chain rings and cassette and thus wears it faster (to what extent, I don't know, it might even be negligible.)

Thanks for the replies guys ... I understand that there are many factors that influence how long things last, I just wanted some info on what others have experienced so that I am a little more informed when making decisions on when I should look at replacing what ..etc ...

Jonny...isn't YOUR drive train = your knees + quads??

When I'm riding up in the mountain ... most definitely :D ... commuting to work ... 2 wheels with gears are just faster
