Tapered or Straight???

Hi all,

Rookie Question:

How do I determine if a bike has a tapered or straight steerer? Must I be able to see with the naked eye or is there something I am missing?

Regards

You should be able to spot it with your eye, it's a bit wider at the bottom

Tapered steerers:

Thinner at the bottom Yeh. But the reduced wall thickness is a tradeoff against the increased material. Thinner but more of. So will probably be the same.

Unless it's a 44mm or 49mm (inner diameter) straight head tube which will be able to straight 1 1/8", 1.5" or tapered steerer depending on the headset used.

was referring to the weight of the steerer here Dave, not the head tube...

Well the weight/strengeth issue could be applied to the actual headtube.

I assumed the OP was referring to if looking at the headtube what is it? Straight or tapered?

Yeah true. But I was responding to maxxis as well, where he references the steerer weight.

You're right though. Head tube is not as easy to diagnose unless it's an old style head tube *like your (old) sanction where it's clearly straight only
