The Polar web site has everything you are looking for and more on HRM based training, and plenty sample programs - if you can't find them there, come back to me.

Thanks for letting me know, that'll be a great help (hopefully!). Did a 3 hr zone 2 workout yesterday on the trainer even with American Hustle (classic film) and the latest hobbit (over dwarfs and elfs) it was very boring but did feel oddly good afterwards.

The hobbit IS boring.... :)

3 hours on a trainer is a long session - with practice your concentration ability will improve on the trainer (or you will die of boredom)

I find that I can concentrate better chasing numbers on a powermeter - which works better for me than HR based training, although the technology needed is expensive, once you go that way, you won't come back to HR based workouts - they are not an objective measure - just a relative one... and while useful, they won't get you the last 20% of the way.
