Calling all Toppies - Stermy Archer gears

Back in the day of three speed Stermy Archer gears , said gears operated within the hub.

 

Is that correct ? If so , how did it work in layman's terms. Also the brakes that operated by

 

back pedaling ?? No friction pads. Or is my memory going with age ( the same way is the

 

DIKWIEL ?? )

Not sure how either worked but I do rember that you could not have pedal brakes with the 3-speed internal hub gears as you had to back-pedal to change the gears.

I stopped thinking about it when i was a kid - as far as i was concerned there was a little man inside who pushed levers and buttons; he was related to the other little man inside the TV flipping pictures over.

No, you could. I had a hub like that, but it was specially built at Linden Cycles, and I have absolutely no idea of why I had it done. Very odd. As I recall, you just stopped pedalling to change the Sturmey gears. Gosh, it is all a long time ago. Mid 70s.

Wow,that was a long time ago. I had a bike at school with one. Worked very well and never gave any hassels at all. In the beginning I favoured the internal gears because they could not snag on bushes and what ever laaities rode through those days. Later I fitted a derailer as well and had a whole stack of gears. I was very proud of myself.

Just rebuilt a 5 speed coaster brake hub, so I can confirm that they do exist. It operates with a cable on either side for various combinations.

 

Quite a mission though, it must be said...
