Am looking for some new cycling routes off the beaten track. Have seen that there is a path from the lookout point at top of Sir Lowrys Pass that will take you to the gate above Gordons Bay.

Some questions:

  1. Can one ride it and do you need a permit?
  2. If so where can you purchase the permit?

AFAIK it's a no go. pretty sure there will be signs at the car park indicating as much.

owned by city of cape town, and it's basically dam property so not even hiking allowed up there. crystal pools trail is done from the steenbras river mouth, but can't be linked to here. don't even have picnic sites on the dam anymore.

despite that, it was used for cape epic once.

My understanding there is an old Wagon route from Somerset all the way to somewhere in the Elgin area

That is not the part we are looking at and it is not part of the Steenbras dam conservancy (Kogelberg Nature Reserve).

Idea is to go up the wagon trail and then cross the N2 at the top and go down via Gordons Bay.

Jip, I think the old wagon trail is part of Schapenberg if I'm not mistaken. I went to kleinmond onver December and even the kogelberg trails were closed due to recent flood damage. Hopefully the powers that be will open some trails in the Sir lowry's pass area...
