  1. he has finished quite a few though. and dr jannie du plessis finished munga. some big okes can take the heat
  2. so this whole vitality save money on flights thingymajig. do you really have to join the bank first to get a discount, or is there another link that they hide??
  3. another thing. remember the Cape Epic fantasy league? imagine having to pick the ladies field with it being so shallow? https://www.facebook.com/capeepic/posts/the-absa-cape-epic-fantasy-league-is-live-on-the-bike-hub-make-your-predictions-/10156348334238319/ 4th place is 10+mins back, 6th is almost half an hour off GC (in contrast, GC mens have still got 9 within 10mins).
  4. more importantly, I have clearly been living under a rock. Bart cut off the pony tail?!!!
  5. Did you hear that?! It was loud, it was fast It was his point flying past you, but you missed it completely? He most definitely believes in science, which is why he told you to go get some science to back up your topic (you're the one who started it, so bring some evidence to back up your concern). I'm going to put myself firmly in the "not worried" camp. If the entire cycling world is ok with plastic bottles, from WT level down then the risk is something I'll accept. For now I'd put a pause on this thread as you've just compared drinking out of plastic bottles to smoking. Suggest you go here, hone your skills and come back charging! https://www.facebook.com/groups/2046014892372345
  6. extra 19km has extra 700m climbing. that should answer your questions
  7. I do think ACE are very keen on growing the live coverage, that is what would make the event actually financially lucrative. It's very difficult, but they have been leading inoovaters in this field (the ebike livefeed for one was a spinoff company that pushed to get it, but it gets stuck with cell coverage sometimes). The terrain and broken racing make it incredibly hard to put on a good live product. Go watch any trailrunning live stream and compare.. or here is the feed from the World Marathon champs last year to compare
  8. dunno about that entirely, probably more down to cyclelab pushing the brand. It's not like Bulls ever had much market here despite 10+ yrs of podiums
  9. might not be for everyone. lots of cheapo nylon still there. not an easy village to organise, i suspect there will be a lot of people in tulbagh/ceres/wolseley guesthouses then moving to wellington/paarl
  10. do you still have the yoga for cyclists DVD? like the marianne vos title. 11 years ago - (just won omloop the other day)
  11. Great story. As much as I was one of those moaning about the cost and commercialisation of the Epic at the time, KV kickstarted an industry. Not mentioned here, but I know the IDC took on funding commitments before ABSA came in and it could wash it's own face - incredible investment if you think what the event has given back to RSA inc. Very interesting to see where he goes next. Maybe reading too much into it but the door for him to setup a rival series with staff he trusts seems open.
  12. @Nick just for reference sake, found this on the topic tag - your review on the 2017 S-Works epic, (guessing that would be about V5 in the range if this is V8?) Was R140k, and the comments are indeed similar on pricing at the extremes of the range! https://bikehub.co.za/news/first-ride-2017-specialized-s-works-epic-29-world-cup-r6033/
  13. That's the crux of it. As mtb has become the "new golf" and C level execs all need to be in on it to be making deals, so the market has shifted. Not sure if this is a good thing for joe public at the middle end as it clearly generates healthy revenue for the LBS or just makes everything relatively pricier. 20yrs ago, you could not buy a version of the world champion's bike. At that level there would be a lot of custom kit, any top10 rider on a stock bike would make a few waves. Things have changed, and rapidly. I'm surprised you're surprised people are still talking about it. MTB for R295k - of course people are going to roll eyes and comment. Wasn't that long ago that the first R100k+ RRP bike got the internets burning. Also, this is launched at the backdrop of Trek downscaling their stock and models with an oversupply.
  14. should we? The DA had a huge stand at westlake/main road t-junction, with trucks and banners. Alan Winde (DA Wcape premier) and Geordin Hill-Lewis (DA mayor of Capetown) both rode the event. It's an election year and with out of town cyclists from other provinces this was a prime vote securing soapbox, which they took advantage of. (I didn't see Razzmatazz anywhere, nor could I hear him - 12 years ago)
  15. Hashim Amla scored a triple hundred during Ramadan. Doing my best not turn this into a religious debate, but my common sense meter is redlining. https://www.vox.com/2017/5/25/11851766/what-is-ramadan-muslim-islam-about seems like a group of fasting riders could ride together slowly, as a charity batch. Surely that can be a "sacrifice", and you could always make up the day earlier or later? Great opportunity for a food drive. (or ebikes going to go like hotcakes).
  16. The taxi driver that killed Burry got 6 with 3 suspended, who knows what time he actually served*. These cases can't bring the cyclists back, but can only hopefully go a little way in forming better driving habits. For that the media needs to follow the full process and circulate the outcome. This was in court 2 days ago and a media release yesterday. I don't see it anywhere (maybe it is too soon?). This has been a higher profile than normal incident. Not even PPA who did this https://pedalpower.org.za/a-promise-to-andre/ have reported on it. *this should have been reported.
  17. Nino has burnt through a lot of team mates, reckon they both said "sorry, it's olympic year"!
  18. that was Giro del Capo. as a student we all bunked morning lectures the day that rolled through town.
  19. how significant do you think it is, maybe 1500 riders? I know this was discussed earlier, was there ever a formal approach to CTCT to accommodate it? it affects both '25 and '26, right? Dates for Ramadan Holiday Date Days to Go Ramadan 2022 Sunday, April 03, 2022 -711 Ramadan 2023 Thursday, March 23, 2023 -357 Ramadan 2024 Monday, March 11, 2024 -3 Ramadan 2025 Saturday, March 01, 2025 352 Ramadan 2026 Wednesday, February 18, 2026 706 Ramadan 2027 Monday, February 08, 2027 1061 The obvious* plan is to just do night riding! get a posse together and do it on argus saturday night from 8pm, WILD!
  20. in the oversimplifiication we're looking at it differently, but in 2010 rand terms no bike cost more than *R100k. So your R167k doesn't exist in 2010 rands, if you're back converting from today's price in relative mcdonald burger terms or something then that is a different argument. *I'm sure someone can find the a local review on a 2010 spec epic top of the range online that would list the price in rand terms. All I could find with a quick search was the Bicycling.co.za buyers guide. internet archive gets me the 2010 and the search function tops out at R95-R99k. So I don't think your R167k Spec epic exists in 2010, .Therefore going back to your original statement that the top of the range mtb costs the same as an entry level polo, is false.
  21. I think you're talking crap, BUT only because I'm going on gut feel. If you really have been following then you'd have the data. Also we're talking outliers, the XT level price would probably be a better "burger index" but it's the marquee that gets the headlines. let's fact check that one: 2024 1.4 polo vivo trendline = R262k here spez epic 8 = R295k 2010 polo entry level R101500 here Sworks epic world cup R65 000 ($8800 @ R7.4/$) here I stand by my statement that you are talking crap, but I do get your point that while there is more tech in both the polo and mtb these days, the mtb has progressed much more. if you can find the new price of a polo in 1999 then here's what this ballpark cost was!
  22. Don't forget there is a long planned option to give Masiphumele (30 000 people) a second access road. This would releave huge pressure from kommetjie road, but the NIMBYs from Noordhoek in their ivory towers have a toad (that is getting amazing airtime and protection) and are happy to pay lawyers. https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-11-15-is-an-access-road-through-a-township-more-important-than-the-western-leopard-toad/
  23. September 25th 2023 four weeks later https://www.constructionsafety.co.za/2023/10/31/the-n2-section-at-botrivier-has-officially-been-re-opened/ The N2 is not a small road, they made it work chop chop.
  24. Do you miss the Ladies and Bicycles thread? Does it have a place on the bikehub? Would admin have a hernia if he found a thread title like that back here? if you found your answer to all those questions is YES, then the best solution is to go click your browser to this place rather. Some lovely "landscape" too. as you were.
