Just wondering if some one can explain the Vets / Sub Vets thing in South African cycling. Sorry if it sounds a bit 101.

I've been on the CSA website and couldn't find an explanation as to how it works with the PPA, Races, Argus... the whole box and dice really.

Since I moved here a couple of years back I've just ridden the PPA races and worked my way up the seedings.

Now I've cranked the age onto where I'd qualify for one of these groups I was just wondering how, what and when?

Can you only access V / SV from A or B? Can you just buy a licence and pitch up whether you're good enough or not? How many sub groups are there in the V / SV categories? what's the general standard of these groups? What are the benefits?

I do realise that they are for serious racing and not for 'fun' of a time and I've raced enough to know the ins and out of that part of it but there seems to be very little on the PPA site and the CSA one that I could find.

It's probabaly right there with a massive blinking 'read all about it' button on the home page and I just missed it. ;)

Subvet A is 30-34

Subvet B is 35-39

Vet A is 40-44

Vet B is 45-49

Good luck, ..Enjoy!!

So I can just rock up and race there instead If I have a licence? Don't have to qualify?

Most races demand that you have a PPA seeding of below 20 before you can race in one of the Vets categories, even if you have a racing license.

As for the Argus, I know someone with a seeding of 10.5 who is starting in the B-group, even though he's been riding in VA, and finishing in the middle of the pack at local (Gauteng) races. I managed to get a VB start for the Argus with a seeding of 7.4.

Hope that answers your question.

I know if you want to ride Elite your seeding index has to be below a 20 for a male...I know for vets you just need the full racing licence

From the cycleevents (http://cycleevents.co.za/dis-chem-ride-for-sight-2014/) website:

  • Please note: In order to race in the CSA Licence Racing Age Group Categories you must have a seeding index of below 20. If you do not meet the cut-off you will start in the Open/Seeded Group related to your current seeding, regardless of the licence you hold

Elites : PPA A-C Seeding, regardless of age

Subvets : A-D Seeding 30+

Vets : A-E Seeding 40+

If you anywhere between A-C you can race either Elites,Subvets or Vets age depending!

Edit: a bit confusing my last point, but Age group 20-30, cannot race SV and same with 30-40 cannot race VT and so on and so forth

So, my take-away, is that PPA (Cape Town) seeds people differently to the rest of the country. So what the hell do CSA base their criteria on when classifying you as whatever the hell?

Case in point:

SV and same with 30-40 cannot race VT and so on and so forth

We don't have SV and VT and whatever the hell else you lot at the mountain have.

I mean we can't even all talk the same language. (I mean what we call the groups, not whatever it is you lot on the Cape flats speak.)
