Hello,

I've got a "sticky" front axle, and the wheel is difficult to rotate. Spinning the wheel freely - off the bike - it rolls smoothly and noiselessly. Once I put the wheel in place and lock the axle in place, the wheel is difficult to spin. If I loosen the axle a bit, the wheel spins normally. But, then it is loose and not safe to ride.

What could be the problem?

not much detail but it sounds like the (depending on hub type) bearing preload/cup is not set properly and when you tighten to axle/skewer it locks it.

this can be tricky to fix, so I suggest take it to your LBS to sort out.

otherwise check this out

Thanks fanievb. I have 10 thumbs when it comes to bike repairs... I've booked it in at my LBS to sort it out tomorrow.

I cannot fathom how it happened or was upset. It rode perfectly fine on the weekend, and now it is sticking. Sucks. Thanks for your input.

Sealed or ball and race bearings?

It makes a difference as to how to and how easy it is to fix....

Or perhaps brake rub? Happened to me with front and rear, that once the skewer is tightened, there is some brake pad rub on the rotor. Again, can be a few things. Definitely take to the LBS

Thanks guys. I took it to my LBS and it was my bearings that seized. I have Sun Ringle Dirty Flea hubs. The bearings were wear and tear damaged and wee replaced for R250. Now the bikes rides so smoothly again.
