How to measure correct chain length ?

I have always put the chain on the big front chain ring and over the biggest ring on the the cluster. Join the chain and add 2 extra links. The chain does not go through the derailleur when measuring the length of chain. Hope this helps

Check out the shimano tech docs on the net. There is a graphic there that shows what the ideal rear derailleur position must be with the correct chain length in a certain gear.
