Kryptonite locks are tough, as in Chuck Norris Tuff, as in leg splitting two Volvo truck Van Damme tuff, as in FRAIL Tuff ... you get the message.

But what happens when you discover you lost the one key to your Kryptonite U-Lock and paranoia sets in that should the other key go missing (MIA as it searches for its lost friend). You start wondering if that diamond cutting disc will work on the lock. You wonder if you should start making friends with ATM bombers just in case they need to help you blow up the lock (and you garage in the process).

Well this is where the Key-Safe Program comes in. Kryptonite will send you your first replacement set for free if your lock qualifies for the program. Normal price is only $6 a key but nice to know that they premium price you pay for these locks allows the company to absorb a $12 "gift".

Anyway, ordering the locks requires to send an email which takes a couple of days to get a reply where they ask for your lock details.

if you are paranoid, you can pre-register your key-lock on their site.

I will be updating once I get my keys.

Apparently these won't stop a battery powered angle grinder, which is a tool popular these days with thieves.

Depends on which lock you buy.

They have different grades depending where in the world you live. Funny that first world country bike thieves seem to be the best equipped. You should check out the New Yorker lock but I'm afraid you would get targeted as its a big challenge call to criminals :)

But it is worth looking at the youtube clips on the guys using angle grinders on the Kryptonite range. Trust me, if I had a guy starting up my angle grinder in my garage at 1am I would be very aware of what is going on and so would the rest of the neighbourhood.

They have ways of deadening the grinder sound and hiding the sparks, even a brutal lock like these will be cut off in a minute or 2 with little noise, a good chance you'll not be woken up or even disturbed. There was a thread about thieves and a link to how they cut these very locks off, basically no lock cannot be easily removed by a well equipped theif, it's only a deterrent to make the odds slightly less in the thieves favor.

Not disputing that the well equipped pro bicycle thief would be able to break the lock with minimal noise or suspicion but since they are far and few in this country (unlike Holland), my Kryptonite is a big enough deterrent in this country that I've locked my bike plenty of times at next to our taxi rank without fear.

Important part is that my insurance is happy with my lock <-- thats the part that counts.

They are not very far and few in this country from recent reports on thehub and the cordless grinder it appears has become the defacto tool for organized thieves.

But the key point it seems is the biggest motivating factor is the value of your bike, no lock will stop a thief if the bike is valueable , if it's not terribly valuable then a good lock will help hinder the petty criminals.

I have a New Yorker and at 2kgs it is a mutha to lug around, but the 'clunk' when it closes is very reassuring...

Nice.

I was originally going to get the New Yorker but the price was a bit ouch for me back then. I'm no weight weenie so the extra 2kgs would never have bothered me.
