hi all hubbers.i have a giant indoor trainer.those blue ones.the rolling wheel is eating my tyres at an alarming rate.it seems as if the coating on that silver rotating part where the wheel makes contact is not so lekker.i went through a gatorskin in 2 weeks and even on the conti indoor trainer tyre it did not last more than a week.

My question is whether you can put a new silwer thing in alt can one paint something over that to make it smooth again.

Something is wrong.... not even riding on the road is that aggressive.... bearings not seized?

I would just polish it back to aluminium rather than try paint it again - easy enough to do on a lathe

I doubt it is aluminium, it is probably steel with a chrome coating.

If this is the case, take a piece of tin foil, scrunch it up and rub the part as if you are sand papering it. It won't be perfect, but will be much better than before.

A week.!

That suggests that something is seriously wrong ... certainly more than a coating issue ... those trainer tyres last forever.

dont know about the bearings.it spins as smooth as can be with no sound or vibration.

Are you sure your tyre is not slipping on the wheel? maybe add more pressure to make sure it does not slip when you put power down.

would that make a difference?i am not mechanically inclined hence the question

Sure does - if you are in any doubt, brake the wheel hard on the trainer and see the damage it does to the tyre - flatspots it in next to no time at all (couple of seconds)

It must be tight enough that you cannot make it slip on the roller under pressure - so test it by standing up and cranking hard from stationary - you will feel/hear it slip if it's going to.

You also don't want it too tight.... then it also creates sidewall damage to the tyre, and a lot of heat - with the tire at the correct pressure, you want it just tight enough to not slip, and not any tighter than that.

Also - use the same tire pressure you run on the road - I run mine on the trainer at 9bar - I also generally check it immediately before each trainer session because it drifts a bit down over time.

think i have just found the answer.if only i asked my fellow hubbers i would have had a few extra gatorskins in the garage now.

You can ride those gatorskins till they are about the thickness of 1 piece of paper on a trainer...
