I have mentioned that phenomenon before.

It isn't really limited to helmet wearing.  I find I got more space when I have my cycling kit and no helmet, than full kit with helmet, but even more space when I am wearing jeans and tackies.  Seems motorists have more concern for those without helmets and more consideration for those that are simply riding their bikes (as opposed to training in kit).

There are a lot of similar anomolies in behaviour on our roads.  If I ride down Field's Hill at the speed limit of 80kph, I get hooted at for riding in the middle of the lane.  However, motorists simply get on with passing trucks travelling at 40kph.  Human's are not logical creatures.

Whats up with kyalami? I haven't been for ages and want to go on Thurs pm. Is it 4:30 or 5:00 start? any info welcome I hate trekking out there for nothing Confused.

Back to topic. With traffic (road cycling) and fellow cyclists (even worse, races and club rides) I would be terrified to ride without a helmet. Kyalami in the mornings (or off peak season) I would love to ride without a helmet but do because of the odd laaities and few cyclists who become super aggressive (steroids) when they see someone without a helmet!

pls, info on kyalami...

saw some kids the other day on BMX's dirt jumping and getting some serious air, 3 to 4m's straight up without wearing helmets. Personally I feel naked on my bike without a helmet.

To test another theory' date=' Dr Walker wore a long wig to see if there was any difference in passing distance when vehicles thought they were overtaking a female cyclist. Vehicles gave him an average of 14cm more space when he was wearing the wig.

Wonder if he used a Blonde wig? Perhaps Blondes would have been given more room by passing motorists

The sh1te is that if some idiot without enough brains to protect splats whatever is left on the tar and kills/maims himself, we may just lose the place as a venue to ride.
