CV Joint - 2005 Subaru Outback

Morning Hubbers,

My right side front CV joint on my 2005 Outback needs replacing.

A service provider I use wants to disassemble the drive shaft, replace only the CV joint and then rebuild the drive shaft rather than buy the complete item from Subaru.

Any Subaru owners out there with an opinion on this and if you were to do it, what CV joint would you use? How do I check the integrity of the CV joint against a standard Subaru joint? Thanks.

Who is doing the work for you? I use a guy in Kuilsriver.

Not them. Can't say who at the mo but it's a provider who damaged the joint in the first place and now have to replace it so they want to do it on the cheap by buying a no-name brand joint and having the shaft rebuilt by a specialist like CV Joint centre or suchlike

The concensus on cv joints on the subarus are that you should buy complete unit from SubaruSA and replace the whole thing, this will ensure you get the desired result and not have to replace cv joints too soon.

It is possible for the exiting unit to be refurbed, as you descibe above, but according to forum experst in 'Merica are that you are wasting time and money.

Check on that forum, think there is a dude called steve in CT that does work on subies and does not require a tub of vaseline like the stealers.

as a matter of interest, how many kms? Are you sure it's the cv joint and not maybe the centre diff? Edit: saw your post above.

If you have time,

check out www.rockauto.com

can buy parts from the states for abhout a third of what the stealers want - shipping costs a bit and the wait for S(h)APO to take their time getting the part to you.

I ordered a coilpack from them which cost me R500 for the part, add R800 for shipping and the vat, it was less than the R2500 that SubaruSA wanted. Waited about 3 weeks (one week to get fromt he sates to our shores, and two weeks for the s%itty postal services to get the box to my PO.)

I think they had complete halfshafts for about R800 last time I checked

Thanks. The site looks very good but I just need to find out which model is mine. Any idea if mine would be a 2.5L H4 or a 2.5L L4? It's a 2005 2.5 Auto. Can't think of anything else to describe it.
