also Shimano's front derailleur technology is superb and makes it an easy item to life with. SRAM has never matched Shimano in this area and by doing away with the front derailleur they shed a weakness and overcome it with a better thought out sprocket set.

How did you come to that conclusion?

Have used Sram X7/X9/Xx Fd for the last 4yrs and they were all set and forget hassle free no problems at all.

Also used Slx and Xt didn't notice them being much better or worse, all I noticed was the more you spend with either brand the better the Fd. Currently using XX Fd and the shift is flawless. Hauw

Hi I am converting a bike to 1 x 9 but am unsure what blade to use, will a single speed blade work or do I have to use a dedicated 1 x blade like race face.

In and around Cape Town, I rode a 1x9 comfortably with 32T ring on a 11-34 cassette.

Two marginally related questions:

I know Shimano say the 10spd chain is as strong as the 9 spd but if you take away some of the lower gears is there not a risk of larger forces on the chain, particularly cross chaining with an 11spd rear only and hence chain breakage? Lot of breakage among the pro's recently it seems.

Does the Shimano 11 spd shifter have a more than one gear at a time / rapid change facility (maybe only on the XTR?)? Pity no Gripshift.

Not that I am in any way considering 1 x 11. I need a proper granny.

Chain tension at a given power output is a function of the size of the rear sprocket, and increases as the size of the sprocket decreases. So the 42t will actually help here. As for cross chaining, I imagine it would accelerate wear on the chain and sprockets, but it's been designed to work like that.

But if all other things remain equal, the thinner the chain, the faster it'll wear since there's less material to wear away.

SRAM's 11sp quick links are also not the strongest things out there in my limited experience - I'd guess that a fair number of the breakages you speak of are caused by this.

Personal experience and general industry opinion. The Shimano front derailleurs and shifter works together far more harmoniously than any of the others. SRAM have built some beefy mechs for the front but they have nver captured Shimano's smooth and trouble free operation under all conditions
