thread resurrection... because ‘give it a tri’ has quite a lot going on already, and it seems like a better idea to continue this than to start another topic...

Signed up for Tinman 4 Sprint at Suncoast on Sunday (28 Oct), my first race of the summer after a consistent winter of riding & running (started swimming again 3 Sept). I am keen to see if I’ve made any progress.

Anyone else going to be there?

Yip I'm here! Sea is looking mint!

The sea was indeed mint (calm & less than 1m swell) despite the swim location having to be moved from Suncoast Beach to Dairy/North Beaches due to there being no shark nets in place at the northern beaches. This revised format (swim-run-bike-shortened run) definitely changed the dynamics of the racing, but it was the same for everyone.

A 2-3 (gusting 5) knot NE breeze also influenced racing with big packs forming on the multi-lap draft-legal cycle route, which combined with the speed differential between front of pack & tailenders resulted in at least one big crash.

The run on the promenade towards Blue Lagoon & back was hot, fast & furious as always.

A well organized event appreciated by serious racers and first-timers alike as well as all of us in between, with the Durban summer weather playing its part (today in contrast there is a stiff 10 knot NE wind and the sea swell has risen to over 2 meters).

Here’s a link to the results, seem to be a few gremlins in the split timing that need to be sorted out: http://results.finishtime.co.za/results.aspx?CId=35&RId=2618

Edit: FinishTime results have been amended.

Yeah, the swim split has the 1 and a bit km run to T1 included in it, was horrified when I first looked at my swim time, thought it couldn't be right!

All in all a good day, only gripe is the multi lap cycling having to dodge other cyclists. Otherwise was an awesome day out!

Yes, swim+T1+run1 is a single split, but I think they have also not allowed for the fact that we entered T2 (short run to bike transition) via the bike dismount chute & not off the beach... and have also mixed up their timing mats coming off the bike because the elapsed time off the bike is longer than the elapsed time leaving T3 onto the second run... and if you add up the split times they add up to more than the overall time...and the overall time is also 2+mins too long according to my watch. Hopefully they take the time to sort it out properly otherwise what’s the point of having timing/chip system at all, you could just have someone with a clipboard ticking people in & out of transition. (Not that that is what I’m advocating, I do like having the data to review as long as it’s accurate).

Due to the large number of novices and the speed of the front pack I think the race instructions and pre-race briefing should give more clear & explicit instructions to keep left. And a better system for entering & leaving the main loop opposite Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Ok yeah my watch also had a few minutes less than my timing chip time. Makes sense.

And agreed, I think a more comprehensive brief of what to do for the novices would have been a bit helpful. And the enter/exit a MM was horrendous, luckily I was spat out the back of a group by the time I had to jump the curb to finish the cycle  :w00t:

Looking forward to the swim runs/ midmar triathlons this summer though!
