I am also planing something like this and was maybe going to weld a washer type thing just to support the hole just in case but think that might be overkill.

I know absolutely nothing about structural strengths or engineering. I spoke to a guy at a engineering workshop and he told me to just make sure it's not too close to a joint and don't let it heat up,and if I do this it "should" be fine. I also did a google search and found a few forum's (mostly american), and saw that many of the frame builders there just drill the hole in.

Even though the washer might be overkill, I would be more worried about the heat caused by the welding weakening the other joints or even effecting the composition of the frame material.

Basically how I drilled the hole:

1) Make sure you know exactly which way to slant the hole, front hole: slant drill machine towards the front wheel, back hole slant it to the rear wheel.

2) Decide on how close to the welding you want the cable to go in and out

3) Start with a small drill bit and just drill it straight in, I used a 1.5mm

4) Switch to a 3mm and once again just drill it straight

5) Switch to a 4mm, drill it in straight and start slanting the hole to the direction of choice

6) Switch to a 5mm and follow step 4.

7) Insert hose
